Two-Day Workshop
The intensive two-day training workshop is designed to assist people who wish to gain a better understanding of their dog and to learn the most effective way to train behaviour and develop a relationship, such that their dog is willing to work with them. Day two of the workshop can cater for up 10 ten dogs, and not everyone's dog will be suitable to attend this session. However, if you are willing to learn the skills, you are invited to attend without your dog and still have the opportunity to apply the techniques.
- Over the two days we offer explanation and demonstration of safe, effective methods to train your dog.
- Assistance in mastering the ability to apply those methods to your dog in order to train behaviours you want, in place of behaviours you don't want.
- Exercises to build your dog's focus on you and responsiveness to you.
Day 1 - Canine Behaviour (without dogs)
1. KNOW YOUR DOG - Understanding and being objective about what is going on with your dog.
· Canine Body Language
· How dogs learn and see the world - Pavlov's dog
Stress as a physical event
o Physical manifestations (Gone limbic)
o Behavioural manifestations (reactions, not actions)
· Effects of your interference
o Lack of safe haven or escape (lead restrictions, scary owner)
· Treat the cause, not the symptom
o Anxiety and frustration are the causes of most aggressive, reactive, frantic, noisy behaviour in dogs
· Strategies for unexpected situations
2. MANAGEMENT
· What you need to change if you want your dog to change
· Set realistic goals
o Your idea of a good time v. your dog’s idea
o Reliability and performance in the pet dog
· What is best for your dog v. what is important to you
· Setting up for success and avoiding rehearsal of undesirable behaviour
· Being proactive – “Don’t shoot the Dog!’
o Know your triggers
o Read your dog
o Prevention
§ Manage your environment
§ Act early
3. TRAINING THEORY & PRACTISE
· Operant conditioning - antecedent, behaviour, consequence
· Desensitisation and counterconditioning
· Early intervention and prevention v damage control
· Train, don’t restrain – your aim is self-control in your dog, not manual restraint by you
· Your body language and actions and reactions
· How to give answers, not correction (reward versus punishment)
