Taking your dog to training

When you take your older dog (not puppy) to training, check with the training organisation what is required of you and your dog. In general, your dog needs to be:Urbandogz

  • 16 weeks of age or older
  • Fully vaccinated
  • Friendly towards other dogs and people
  • Able to eat food when out in public

Check with your trainer their requirements for puppies.

We recommend Paws N People Positive Dog Training:

DO NOT FEED YOUR DOG BEFORE GOING TO TRAINING

For both puppies and older dogs, you will need to take with you:

  • Your dog's vaccination record to be sighted by the trainer
  • Your dog on a flat collar or head halter or harness (no check chains please), with a soft lead
  • Comfortable, flat, closed shoes
  • Poo bags
  • A bumbag or treat pouch for your treats (trust me you do not want bits of luncheon meat and cheese in your pocket)
  • Your dog's favourite toy
  • A mat for your dog to lie on
  • Lots of really yummy treats
  • Water and a water bowl for your dog

Please remember there are a lot of distractions in and around dog training activities and if you want to get your dog's attention, you will need something really interesting to compete with all the other exciting dogs, people and smells. Bits of boring dry kibble and schmackos alone will not be enough initially, and we have found most, smelly treats are best. We recommend small pieces of:

  • cheese
  • luncheon meat
  • left over roast lamb/chicken/beef
  • basted dried sardines (cat treats)
  • also, a mix of various dry treats, such as broken up schmackos, liver treats, etc to add variety

These suggested treats will need to be modified if your dog has any allergies. Speak to your vet about options, and your trainer should also be able to suggest alternative food rewards.
